Aston University

The most surprising thing about Aston University is its proximity to the centre of Birmingham. Corporation Street links the university with the Bullring shopping centre and New Street Station (4 hours south west from Edinburgh) – making most attractions a five minute stroll away.

Renowned for its Business School, but rated excellent for a number of other subjects, Aston has its own unique approaches to learning, including the Sandwich Year, when students go out into the big, wide world and get themselves a job. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of Aston is its diverse mix of students who come from every culture and corner of the globe.

Notable alumni include comedian Jasper Carrot and musician John Lodge.

"I chose Aston after having looked around a few Universities, namely Leeds and Loughborough. I was very taken by the tour that was given by the existing student at Aston University and loved the intimate layout of the campus (plus the fact that it looked like I could roll out of bed and be in a lecture in under three minutes). When i found out about the opportunity of a placement year that could be facilitated either in the UK or abroad I was 100% confident that Aston was the place for me. My main advice would be to make use of the placement year and try to focus on a year that will set you apart from your peers. I would also say that Aston has a fantastic library that I lived in final year, such a mellow and relaxing space to utilise when studying. Finally, make use of all the extra-curricular activities that Aston offers a great University!" Alex Wotherspoon, Aston University
