University of Sheffield
A walk or tram ride from the train station (1 hour south of York), the University of Sheffield commands a good spot just on the fringes of the city centre. The streets leading from the campus in to town are full of student-friendly services, quirky shops, and decent bars.
The university itself covers a lot of ground, and can feel quite large on first arrival. However, many of the services students need are based centrally, and nothing is more than a fifteen minute walk away.
Notable graduates from Sheffield include MP David Blunkett, film director Stephen Daldry, comedian Eddie Izzard, and novelist Joanne Harris.
